Spinal Cord and Meninges Flashcards
Spinal Cord
column of nervous tissue extending from medulla oblongata to the second lumbar vertebral within the vertebral column
Cauda Equina
“horse tail”, fan of nerve fibers
Gray matter
containing cell bodies and dendrites
White matter
containing nerve fiber tracts with myelin sheath
Meninges
three layers of connective tissue membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord
Dura mater
outermost membrane of the meninges, thick tough membrane contains channels (dural sinuses) that contain blood
Subdural space
below dural membrane
Arachnoid membrane
second layer surrounding the spinal cord and brain
Subarachnoid space
contains cerebral spinal fluid (CSF)
Pia mater
closest to the brain and spinal cord, contains delicate connective tissue with rich supply of blood vessels
