Brain parts and functions Flashcards
Frontal Lobe
Personality, Emotions, Thought processes, Broca’s area (language expression), behavior, intelligence, memory, movement
Parietal Lobe
Body sensations, Body scheme, body awareness (-kinesia), visual and spatial perception, intelligence, language, reading, sensation
Temporal
Understanding speech, Wernicke’s area (language comprehension), behavior, hearing, memory, speech, vision
Cerebellum
Active, voluntary coordinated movements, Quality of movement, balance, coordination
Brain stem
blood pressure, breathing, consciousness, heartbeat, swallowing (Consists of Midbrain, Pons, Medulla)
Left hemisphere of brain
mathematical functioning, reasoning, analytical thinking, language
Right hemisphere of brain
Spatial orientation and relationships, Art, music, emotions, and intuition
Broca’s area
language expression
Wernicke’s area
language comprehension
Pons
nerve relay system to the eyes and face
Medulla oblongata
regulates HR, control muscles in the walls of vessel (Vasodilation, Vasoconstriction- BP) and muscles of the respiratory system (RR)
Diencephalon
consists of the epithalamus, subthalamus, hpothalamus, and thalamus
Cerebrum
The largest part of the brain aka the “thinking” area
Cerebral cortex
nerve cells that lie in sheets on the cerebrum
Thalamus
Relay station (“triage center”) for sensory impulses; control of awareness and consciousness
