spinal cord and concussion Flashcards
What are the symptoms of a concussion?
diff. evry pt. look for headache, dizziness, ataxia, deep tendon reflex problems, muscular strength problems, mental status changes.
What are the 2 evaluating tests for concussion/
SCAT2 and SAC.
Is it important to have a baseline test when evaluating concussion?
yes, that way you can see how severe their symptoms are.
When managing a concussive patient, what should you do?
allow them to rest, do not play sporst for 7-10 days.
When there is a TBI, what shoudl you always suspect?
spinal cord injury
urinary retntion, constipation, hypotension, bradyacardia, quadrapelagia sparing the face can be symptoms of what?
spinal cord injury
What is the best way to evaluate for spinal cord injury?
CT scan is the BEST
use plain films to look odontoid area.
MRi can be used to the integrity of the cord
Which type of spinal cord injury can patients have a chance of recovery from?
incomplete.
How will incomplete spinal cord lesions present as?
They will show as complete, but slowly over time they will be able to regain their function.
Where does the lesion have to be in order to affect breathing
High cervical regions that are above the cervical region.
a lower than cervical region is not likely to cause?
respiratory failure.
in which condition woudl you experience bilateral paralysis, decreased pain/temperature sensation distal to the lesion. but the vibration and position sense are preserved?
anterior cord syndrome
anterior cord syndrome has a high chance of full recovery- t/f
false- it only has a 10% chance to regain significant function
What causes anterior cord syndrome?
flexion injuries or laceration of anterior spinal artery from vertebral fractures
Which condition affects the gray matter in the spinal cord and presents with decreased pain/temperature sensation and muscle weakness in the upper extremities bilaterally.
Central cord syndrome.
