Spinal Cord Flashcards
What is the spinal cord composed of?
Nerve tissue
What is the spinal cord surrounded by?
Bony vertebrae
Where does the spinal cord transmit impulses to and from?
The brain
What does the spinal cord control?
Reflex actions
Where is the spinal cord located?
In the neural canal of the vertebrae
What lines the neural canal?
Meninges
What does the spinal cord appear as in a cross-section?
An outer ring of white matter surrounding an inner H-shaped region of grey matter
What is the white matter of the spinal cord composed of?
Axons
What is the grey matter of the spinal cord composed of?
Cell bodies
Where is the central canal located?
At the centre of the grey matter
What does the central canal contain?
Cerebrospinal fluid
What is the function of the dorsal root?
To carry sensory neurons into the spinal cord
What is the function of the ventral root?
To carry motor neurons out of the spinal cord
What links neurons together in the spinal cord?
Interneurons link them in the grey matter
What are found in the dorsal root swellings?
Ganglia (groups of cell bodies of sensory neurons)
