Spinal Cord Flashcards
Dermatomes
- area of skin innervated by particular spinal nerve
- describe dermatome of limbs
Meninges
pia matter on cord subarachnoid space arachnoid matter epidural space dura matter subdural space bone
Grey vs White matter
grey = cell bodies (butterfly) white = axons (myelinated)
Peripheral vs spinal vs segments
- Spinal cord > 2 rami (sensory and motor separate) > SPINAL NERVE (mixed)> goes through intervertebral foramen > PERIPHERAL NERVE
- segments of spinal nerve
naming of spinal nerves
- according to vertebrae where segment exists
- C: nerve exits ABOVE corresponding vert (8 nerves, 7 verts)
- everywhere else: nerve exits below
Phrenic Nerve - which roots?
C3,4,5
Sympathetic chain
T1-L2
S2-S4
pudendal, roots of splanchnic
name dermatome for: back of head shoulder thumb middle finger pinky nipples umbilicus
head C2 C5 thumb: C6 middle finger: C7 pinky: C8 nipples: T4 umbilicus: T10
name dermatome for: groin knee big toe pinky toe sole of foot perianal
groin: L1
knee: L4
big toe: L5
pinky toe: S1
sole of foot S1
perianal: S5
where does spinal cord end, what is called?
L2 @ conus medullaris
What forms dura sac. where does it end?
dura and arachnoid matter
ends at S2
What is the lumbar cistern? describe and where?
- subarachnoid space bt arachnoid and pia matter after cord ended at L2
- contain CSF, cauda equina, filum terminale interna
- L2-S2
Filum interna
Filum externa
interna: in the lumbar cistern
externa: outside dura sac > coccyx
- anchoring
Denticulate ligaments
pia matter!
-anchor spinal cord to dura sac
what is in the epidural spce
fat, blood vessels
Distinguish bt levels of cross sections of spinal cord
- Cervical: large ventral horns (C5-T1 ad L2-S3 enlargements for limbs)
- Thorcaci: Intermediolateral cell column (T1-L2 for sympathetic pregang neurons)
- Lumbar: S2-S4 has IML for parasymp pregang N
- less white matter (bigger butterfly)
