- Single fruit produces 2 spices
- Native to South East Asia
- The seed is nutmeg the flesh is mace
- Nutmeg used as spice flavor for rum
- Became popular to 2 islands in the Caribbean’s—Trinidad and Grenada
- Picture of nutmeg is on Grenada’s flag
- Dutch tried making monopoly on nutmeg. Anyone caught cultivating will be beheaded
Black pepper
- Piper nigrum—black pepper
- One of the worlds most important spices
- Native to South East Asia
- One of the most important trading items between South East and Brazil
- Brazil leads in the world’s production
- Plants do well away from origin because lacks natural pests
- Black pepper—whole fruit dried
- White pepper—just endocarp dried

Cinnamon
Cinnammorioum (genus)
made from the bark of a tree
introduced from South East Asia widely cultivated in our area. Canfer oil used in this product comes from Canfer tree.
Rosemary
Rosmarinus (genus)
• Foam of the ocean
• Frequently found on rocks by the ocean. Make white flowers that look like foam
• Used in perfumes and shampoos
Thyme
Thymus (genus)
• Oil found in this genus has the highest and antiseptic used in medicine
• Ward off nightmares
Mint
Methus (genus)
• One of the most commercial exploited in US
Saffron
Crocus (genus) • World’s most expensive spice • 1st plant to bloom in spring • Comes from smallest part of flower • Contains intense taste and bright yellow color • One of the oldest spices in use
Sage
Salvia (genus)
• Considered healing plant and fertilizer plant
Mint Family
New name-Lamicea, Old name Laitatae
• Herbaceous
• Comes from Mediterranean climate (cool and dry)
• Very aromatic
• Oil leaves antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant
