A

Often sold and marketed to individuals who feel disenfranchised (like veterans and youth), the Designer of the weapon described it as a weapon of war. Amount of guns is correlated to incidents of school shootings.

Q

How does DASA affect schools

A

Schools must actively work to stop bullying. Schools must provide a safe environment and investigate bullying. This includes in and out of school.

17
Q

Ways to reduce bullying

A

Bystander intervention must be taught. Cameras at the back of the bus. Revenge porn legislation and parental responsibility legislation. Teachers are bullying mandated reporters.

18
Q

Why is the NYS bullying reporting system not taken seriously?

A

People do not know what is worth reporting or if it will truly help.

19
Q

How did the school fail Larry King?

A

School created an IEP to make Larry act straight. They did nothing to intervene with the bullying. Teachers knew that Brandon had made threats. Most of the staff was homophobic. Victim blamed Larry because he dressed feminine.

20
Q

How did the school fail the rest of the students that Larry King attended?

A

The school required students to return to school the same day as the shooting. Students were not given a space to heal. No therapy was provided. Student was denied to have a plaque with Larry’s name on a tree she planted in his remembrance.

21
Q

How may have Brandon’s upbringing affect his behaviors?

A

Brandon’s mother was an abuser and he was left with his father who was involved in gang violence. He saw his mother be shot by his father. He would punch a tree until his hand was bloody. When he showed interest in Hitler, his brother connected him with a white supremacist.

22
Q

What has changed since Valentine Road was filmed?

A

I believe we are overall a more accepting nation. Laws such as DASA and current laws regarding IEPs would have made the school obligated to accept Larry’s expression and handle the bullying.

23
Q

What evidence of victim blaming is seen in the film Valentine Road?

A

Some teachers felt Larry needed a “kick in the butt” for his femine expression. Some jurors felt that Larry saying his name was Laquisha justified Brandon shooting. Many downplayed Brandon’s obsession with Hitler and his ideals. Jurors and teachers felt that Larry pushed Brandon to shoot him after he asked him to be his valentine and embarrassed him.

24
Q

Adolescent Egocentrism

A

Teens are the center of their world. Have difficulty relating to other’s issues.

25
Q

Imaginary Audience

A

Adolescent belief that everyone is watching them.

26
Q

Personal Fables

A

Beliefs that adolescents are immune to harm, or that they are more unique than they truly are.

27
Q

Identity Foreclosure

A

Taking on an identity without exploring.

28
Q

Psychological moratorium

A

Exploring different identities.

29
Q

Generational Gap

A

Idea that parents are more traditional than their kids. In general, however, conservative parents tend to raise conservative kids and vise versa.
