Spermatogenesis (-iogenesis) Flashcards
When does sperm mature?
At puberty (Spermatogonia –> Spermatozoa)
Explain Primordial germ cells to spermatids
PGCs form spermatogonial cells, some form type A spmtg. cells, divide to form type B spmtg., divide to form primary spermatocytes, and secondary after meiosis 1, and spermatids after meiosis 2
Where are spermatogonia and spermatids during maturation?
Embedded in Sertoli cell recesses, joined by cytoplasmic bridges due to no cytokinesis
What regulates spermatogenesis? How?
LH, stimulates testosterone prod. in Leydig cells, which binds to Sertoli cells promoting spermatogenesis (FSH also helps)
What is Spermiogenesis?
Spermatids are transformed into Spermatozoa
What happens in Spermiogenesis?
Acrosome is formed, Nucleus condenses, Neck-middle-tail formed, cytoplasm sheds as residual bodies (phag. by sertoli cells)
Where do spermatozoa go?
Enter seminiferous tubules, traveling to epididymis where they gain full mobility
