spermatogenesis Flashcards
what are the stages of spermatogenesis
1) multiplication
2) growth
3) maturation
4) differentiation
describe the processes which occur int he multiplication stage of spermatogenesis
1) cells of the germinal epithelium divide by mitosis to make diploid spermatogonia and more germinal epithelial cells on the outer layer of the seminiferous tubule
describe the processes which occur in the growth stage of spermatogenesis
the spermatogonia divide more via mitosis and enlarge making diploid primary spermatocytes
describe the processes which occur in the maturation stage of spermatogenesis
1) primary spermatocytes undergo meiosis I making haploid secondary spermatocytes
2) the secondary spermatocytes undergo meiosis II to produce haploid spermatids
describe the processes which occur in the differentiation stage of spermatogenesis
the haploid spermatids differentiate into spermatozoa- forming their midpiece and tails
throughout this process, they are obtaining nutrients through Sertoli cells
what are Sertoli cells and their function
1) provides sperm with nutrients
2) protects the sperm from the male immune system as they are genetically different (23 chromosomes vs 46)
when does spermatogenesis start
puberty
when in the human life cycle does spermatogenesis stop
end of life/ death
how many gametes are produced after spermatogenesis
4
what is the precise location of the production
the seminiferous tubules- germinal epithelium
list the accessory cells during spermatogenesis
Sertoli cells
