Speed Limits Flashcards
Are you always allowed to drive at the maximum posted speed limit?
Maximum speeds apply only under safe conditions. Don’t drive so slowly as to impede traffic unless a minimum speed limit is posted.
When should you slow down?
Slow down approaching intersections, curves, hills, or narrow/winding roads.
What should you be aware of at all times?
Be aware of pedestrians, cyclists, weather, and road conditions at all times.

What is a rural area?
A region outside of cities and towns, typically with lower population density and higher speed limits.
What qualifies as an alley?
A narrow roadway behind or between buildings, mainly used for service access, parking, or deliveries.
What qualifies as a “other highway”?
Any public road or highway that isn’t classified as an interstate, tollway, or four-lane highway.
What is an interstate?
A federally maintained highway that spans multiple states, designed for high-speed travel with controlled access (on-ramps/off-ramps).
What is a tollway?
A highway where drivers must pay a fee (toll) to use certain sections, often electronically or at toll booths.
What is a city/town area?
A developed area with buildings, businesses, and residential zones, usually having a speed limit of 30 mph.
Are the posted speed limits you see the standard speed or are they the maximum allowed?
Posted speed limits indicate the maximum allowed under ideal conditions. You must adjust your speed for weather, traffic, and road conditions.
What is the proper way to drive while in a construction zone?
Slow down, avoid cell phone use (unless hands-free), yield to workers and vehicles, and change lanes away from workers if possible. Obey posted speed limits 24/7.
What is the proper way to drive when around stationary emergency/maintenance vehicles?
Yield, change lanes if possible, proceed cautiously. No photography or cell phone use within 500 feet (except in certain circumstances).
What is the proper way to drive when around approaching emergency/maintenance vehicles?
Pull to the right, allow passage. A complete stop may be necessary. At intersections, remain stopped until the emergency vehicle passes. Do not drive over fire hoses without permission.
What is the proper way to drive when within a school zone?
No cell phone use (unless hands-free), reduce speed to 20 mph, yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
How should you drive when you encounter an ongoing funeral procession?
Yield the right-of-way. Do not drive between vehicles unless directed by law enforcement. Do not join to gain right-of-way.
