Speed, Displacement and Velocity Flashcards
Unit of time
The unit of time is the second (s)
Unit of distance
The unit of distance is the metre (m)
Speed
Speed is the rate of change of distance with respect to time
Unit of speed
The unit of speed is the metre per second (m/s)
Displacement
Displacement is distance in a given direction
Velocity
Velocity is the rate of change of displacement with respect to time
Unit of velocity
The unit of velocity is the metre per second (m/s)
Constant velocity
If an object moves in a straight line and does not speed up or slow down it has a constant velocity
Average velocity
Average velocity = instantaneous velocity (to a high degree of accuracy) provided the average velocity is measured over a very small time interval or a very small distance
Distance-time graphs
A distance-time graph for an object moving with constant velocity is a straight line
The slope of the graph is the speed of the object
