Speed Flashcards
How do we define speed?
Speed is a measure of how far you travel in a set time.
What do these units mean?
M/s
M/h
Km/h
Metres per second
Miles per hour
Kilometres per hour
A hooligan sheep is skateboarding down a farmers track. It takes 5 seconds to travel 10 metres. How fast is the sheep going?
2m/s
A speedy campervan is zooming down the motorway. It travels 15 miles in 30 minutes.
What is its speed in mph?
Either turn 30 mins into hours = 0.5 h
So the answer is 30mph
On a distance time graph what measure always goes up the side?
distance
On a distance time graph what measure is across the bottom?
Time
What does a horizontal line mean on a distance time graph?
There is no movement. You are stationary.
A diagonal line on a distance time graph means…..
You are travelling at a steady speed
When you have a steep line you are travelling…….
Faster
A downhill slope means..
A. You are slowing down
B. You are going backwards
C. You are travelling back to your starting point
C. Travelling at a steady speed back to where you started.
A steep curve means an object is
Accelerating
A curve represents
Changing speed
A curve that levels off is showing
Decelerating. ( slowing down)
What is relative motion?
When you want to know the speed of something when you are moving too.
If two objects are moving in opposite directions on the same straight line, how do you calculate their relative motion?
You add their speeds together.
