Speech Sounds Flashcards
Consonants vs vowels
C’s usually require a narrowly constricted passage/closed passage, whereas vowels are produced with relatively unrestricted air flow.
Consonant - place
Position where maximum constriction occurs. Can be labial (lips), labiodental, alveolar (alveolar ridge), palatal, velar and glottal.
Consonants - manner
Can be a stop, nasal, fricative, approximant (incl. liquids, glides and semi-vowels).
Palatal consonants
Can either be post alveolar or palato-alveolar.
Vowel quadrilateral
Chart showing 4 points related to tongue position for vowels.
Tense vowels
Long and require more muscular tension.
How are vowels described?
By lips (rounded/unrounded), tongue (front-back and high-low) and tense or laxness.
