Speech Breathing Flashcards
ventilation
exchanging air and pressurizing that air
two types of breathing patterns
quiet tidal breathing and speech breathing
Eupneic (quiet) tidal breathing
In the human respiratory system, eupnea or eupnoea is normal, good, unlabored breathing, sometimes known as quiet breathing or resting respiratory rate. In eupnea, expiration employs only the elastic recoil of the lungs.
dyspnea
difficult or labored breathing.
apnea
temporary cessation of breathing, especially during sleep
I fraction
way of quantifying the relative quantity of exhalation and respiration
Duration of Inspiration/Duration of Entire Cycle of breathing
I fraction for quiet tidal
0.4 (40% inhaling)
I fraction for speech breathing
0.1 (10 % inhaling)
Features of quiet tidal breathing.
Inhalation and exhalation are relatively equal. (40/60)
Starts and ends at the same volume level (about 37-40% of vital capacity) (The resting expiratory level REL)
Inspiration Phase in quiet tidal breathing
About 37-40% of vital capacity
vital capacity
a measure SLPS take when measuring voice. Vital capacity (VC) is the maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after a maximum inhalation. It is equal to the sum of inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, and expiratory reserve volume. A person’s vital capacity can be measured by a wet or regular spirometer.
How does an SLP measure air flow?
pneumotachograph
What is a an instrument for measuring the air capacity of the lungs?
spirometer
Why do the lungs get bigger when you contract the diaphragm?
plural linkage
passive recoil forces,
gravity, lung elasticity, decompression of abdominal contents, elasticity of anterior abdominal muscles, and rib de torque
