Q

When you are looking for measures for vocal instability, what measures can you use?

A

Jitter and Shimmer. Measures of short term variability that is cycle to cycle variability in fundamental period and peak amplitude. Higher Jitter and Shimmer values will be high for vocal instability.

Q

Why are Jitter and Shimmer of limited value?

A

Estimates of FO and Jitter are based on either a zero crossing method or a peak picking method. As long as it is quasi periodic it will track well. But for aperiodic sounds the values are not easily found even when there is roughness.
