what is aphasia
Partial or complete loss of speech and language skills
Common causes of aphasia are?
stroke (cva)
head injury
brain tumors
What is receptive aphasia?
difficulty understanding language written or spoken
Speech is mixed and confusing
Cannot understand their own words spoken and dont recognize their mistakes
What is expressive aphasia?
Can understand spoken or written words
Speech is jumbled
Think one thing, say another
Cannot form the right words
Both receptive and expressive aphasia look like?
some clients can only say minimal words or sounds
Some clients may have lost all speech
What is Apraxia?
Motor speech in the brain is damaged so the brain cannot properly coordinate muscles to produce speech
What are signs of a person with apraxia?
The person can understand speech and language
brain cant coordinate jaw, lip + tounge
talk is slow and inconsistent
What does a person with apraxia sound like?
They speak slower
inconsistent
what is dysarthia?
Weakness or paralysis in speech muscles causing speech to be difficult
What does someone with dysatrthia sound like?
slurred speech
speak in flat, harsh or nasal tones
what does dysarthria do to a persons speech?
Problems spacing words
Speech errors are usually consistent and predictable, you will come to learn that.
what are the emotional effects of speech and language disorders?
avoiding social situations avoiding friends and family stress loss on employment difficulties with routines and tasks
What does treatment do for people with speech and language disorders?
uses remaining skills to improve to highest extent possible
teaches other methods of communication
What are some communication aids to better assist clients with speech and language disorders?
Communication boards with pics and words that show functions of daily living
How can you support your clients with their communication needs?
Use communication methods that are best for you client
be alert of signs of fatigue in your client (lack of interest, irritability, deline in understanding)

They allow communication in activities and learning

what is otitis media?
otitis media is infection of the middle ear
what are the causes of otitis media?
viruses

what does otitis media do to the ear?
otitis media damages the bones to the middle ear
can cause damage to the ear drum
what is presbycusis?
gradual hearing loss associated with aging
occurs after age 50

hearing aids are helpful
What is diabetic retinopathy?
blood vessels in the retina are damaged and start to seprate the retina from the back of the eye
what is glaucoma?
a disease that causes optic nerve pressure in the eye
what are cataracts?
a clouding of the lens in the center of the eye
what is presbyopia?
gradual inability to focus on close objects
Who helps a person to communicate?
A speech + language pathologist
What are the effects of hearing impairment?
Hearing impairment can affect speech
Hearing impairment can cause a client to disengage in social events and close relationships
affects all the 5 aspects of health
How should you care for a clients hearing aids?
Apply correctly to avoid screeching noise or fall
Always remove hearing aids before a shower or bath
Make sure hearing aid goes in case on side table when not in use
check batteries when not functioning properly
Make sure hearing aids are clean and in good condition
What are the effects of vision loss?
Brail is used to help a person read
Guide dogs and white canes teach people to get their mobility back
How can you care for a client with vision loss?
To ensure comfort make sure you kindly greet your client to let the know your there and kindly say your goodbyes so they know your no longer present
Explain tasks as they go along and guide them through the process
Make sure the clients space is clean and safe
Become familiar with the way a client hears as well as recognizes touch and smell
