Three Types of Speech Acts
· LOCUTIONARY
· ILLOCUTIONARY
· PERLOCUTIONARY
The actual act of uttering.
It is the utterance or the words said by the person.
LOCUTIONARY ACT
The social function or intention of the utterance.
ILLOCUTIONARY ACT
The performed action intended by the utterance.
PERLOCUTIONARY ACT
(1976), a professor from the University of California, Berkeley, classified illocutionary acts into five distinct categories

speaker expresses belief about the truth of a
proposition. Suggesting,boasting,
and concluding are examples.
ASSERTIVE
The speaker tries to make the listener
perform an action. Some examples are asking,
ordering, requesting, inviting, advising, and begging.
DIRECTIVE
• a speaker to doing something in the future. Examples are promising, planning, vowing, and betting
COMMISSIVE
The speaker express his/her feelings or emotional reactions.
Thanking, apologizing, welcoming, and deploring are examples.
EXPRESSIVE
· Brings a change in the external situation. Some examples are baptizing, blessing, firing, bidding, passing a sentence, and excommunicating.
