Q

Briefly describe emission spectra

A
  • atoms given energy by heating/electrical field
  • electrons jump to a higher energy level
  • when source of energy is removed they drop down a level and release a photon of energy
  • this value corresponds to the electromagnetic radiation of a specific frequency

Q

Describe the absorption spectra

A
  • white light is passed through an elements gaseous atoms
  • certain wavelengths of light are absorbed as all atoms absorb different wavelengths of light
  • wavelength corresponds to the energy taken in by atoms to prompt electrons to a higher energy level

Q

Describe the hydrogen spectra

A

1) atom is excited and absorbs energy causing electron to jump to a higher energy level
2) source removed, electron falls back down and releases a photon of energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation
3) emitted energy is seen as a line in the spectrum
4) E=hf, therefore transitions between different energy levels result in emission of radiation of different frequencies, balmer/lymer falls to n=2/1 as electrons return to second/first shell
