SECTION FORMAT
PART 1 GENERAL: describes administrative, procedural, and temporary requirements unique to the section.

PART 3 EXECUTION: describes installation or application, including preparatory actions and post-installation cleaning and protection.
THE 4 METHODS OF SPECIFYING
- DESCRIPTIVE
- PERFORMANCE
- REFERENCE STANDARD
- PROPRIETARY
DESCRIPTIVE SPECIFICATION
Specifies properties of materials and methods of installation w/o using proprietary names.
A detailed description of physical properties, and workmanship req. for the installation of a product or material.
Req. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE and experience
The burden of performance is assumed by A/E when a descriptive spec is used
Lengthy and tedious - not used as often
when proprietary names are prohibited by law and when adequate reference standards do no exist, a descriptive spec may be only logical choice.
PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION
The end result instead of the means to the end result is specified - must include a way of verifying compliance through some measurement, test, evaluation, or other assurances.
a clg hangar described as “nonsag” (performance) vs “straightened no. 11 wire, tightly wrapped two times” (descriptive)
The contractor is free to choose materials and methods complying with Performance criteria.
A description of the end result of a product or system and includes criteria to be used for verification of proper installation.
Used to encourage INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES - DELEGATES DESIGN TO INDUSTRY SPECIALISTS
REFERENCE SPECIFICATION
Specifies products or processes by established standards.
uses recognized industry standards rather than individually written product or installation criteria
standards must be reviewed carefully to avoid duplications, optional requirements, and contradictions
SAVES A/E TIME
example: ASTM B 211, standard spec for aluminum and aluminum alloy extruded bars, rods, wires, shapes, tubes, ANSI safety codes
Reference standards might contain embedded options, are typ minimums
PROPRIETARY SPECIFICATION
Specifies actual brand names, model numbers, and other proprietary information.
describes products and materials by manufacturer’s name, brand name, model number, or unique characteristic.
CLOSED PROPRIETARY specs do not allow for substitutions
OPEN PROPRIETARY specs allow for alternative products
If no proprietary name is used and only one company supplies the item then it is considered a proprietary spec
WHEN TO USE REFERENCE SPEC
- KNOW THE STANDARD: free of duplications, conflicts - could state most stringent is used, some standards have diff classes of option (A/E must specify which class)
- INCORPORATE THE STANDARD PROPERLY
- ENFORCE THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD
PROPERLY INCORPORATING REFERENCE SPEC
- Name of issuing organization
- Number of the standard
- Title of the standard
- Date of issue of the standard
- Citation of applicable requirements unless entire standard is applicable
