Why Bristol university?
1) MB21 curriculum -> Emphasis on case-based learning + Good mix of teaching styles matches the way I learn + Blends divide between pre-clinical and clinical
2) Intercalation options -> Medical microbiology + Genomic medicine
3) Nice clinical academies that range in size -> Bristol Royal Hospital for Children -> Widespread, but diverse opportunities
4) City of Bristol -> Named best place to live in the UK in 2017 -> Green areas, Bikes, Hot air balloon festival, Banksy art
Bristol course structure
- Year 1 - Concepts of health and wellbeing from multiple perspectives
- Year 2 - Disease processes and list of diagnoses for different symptoms
- Year 3 - Hospital and primary care in clinical academies (alongside learning!)
- Intercalated Year
- Year 4 - Learning about hospital and primary care at all ages (alongside learning!)
- Year 5 - Preparation for FY1 post
Why Birmingham university?
1) Early contact -> 10 days in community with GPs and patients a year for first 2 years -> But limited, so there is still a pre-clinical to clinical divide
2) Intercalation options -> Public health and population sciences
3) Elective in 4th year -> 2 months of full-time study, can be abroad
4) Queen Elizabeth Hospital -> New -> Largest single-floor critical care unit, plus specialists in cancer and organ transplantation
5) MedSoc -> Over 70 societies, sports clubs and charities
6) City -> Multicultural
Birmingham course structure
- Years 1 + 2 - Modules on the structure and function of the body. Lots of prosection.
- Year 3 - Basic clinical skills in teaching hospital and communication skills
- Years 4 + 5 - Medical and surgical specialties. Elective in 4th year.
- Intercalation after 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of study
