Specific Immunity of Host Flashcards
Adaptive Immunity
It is an adaptation resulting from prior
exposure to a particular pathogen/marker
[Resistance is acquired and specific!]
It provides long-term protection against
future exposure to the pathogen. [The system has memory!]
Innate immunity
Defenses against any pathogen
Adaptive immunity
specific antibody and lymphocyte response to an antigen
Nonspecific
The nonspecific system recognizes pathogens
via pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). These are not unique markers.
Summary of specific system and nonspecific system
Specific system – antigens
Important: The specific system recognizes
pathogens via particular (unique) markers present on the cell surface. The markers are called antigens.◦Nonspecific system – PAMPs
Antigen (Ag)
A substance that causes the
body to produce specific antibodies or sensitized T cells
◦Antibodies (Ab) interact with epitopes or
antigenic determinants
Hapten
Antigen is combined with carrier
molecules
◦Not antigen by itself due to small size
