Specific antidotes Flashcards
Antidote for AChE inhibitors (too much ach), organophosphates/cholinergic toxidrome
atropine > pralidoxime
Antidote for acetaminophen poisoning
N-acetylcysteine (replenishes glutathione)
Antidote for Amphetamines (basic)
NH4Cl (ACIDIFY urine)
Antidote for anticholinergic/antimuscarinic poisoning
physostigmine (AchE inhibitor to increase ach) **impt to control hyperthermia since no ach = no activation of sweat glands = no sweating
Antidote for benzodiazepines
flumazenil (BZ antagonist)
Antidote for b-blocker toxicity
glucagon (stress response to increase sympathetic activity, as well as increase glucose)
Antidote for CO poisoning
100% oxygen, hyperbaric oxygen
Antidote for copper (e.g. Wilson’s disease), arsenic, gold poisoning
Penicillamine
Antidote for Cyanide poisoning
nitrite + thiosulfate, hydroxocobalamin
Antidote for digitalis (digoxin) poisoning
digibind (anti-dig Fab fragments)
Antidote for for heparin toxicity
protamin sulfate
Antidote for iron poisoning
deferoxamine, deferasirox (chelate Fe3+)
Antidote for Lead poisoning
EDTA (make sure it’s Ca2+, not the Na+ one that can cause severe hypocalcemia), dimercapol (peanut allergy + needs to be given with alkalinizing agent), succimer, penicillamine
Antidote for mercury, arsenic, gold
dimercapol (BAL, peanut allergy, needs an alkalinizing agent), succimer
Antidote for methanol, ethylene glycol (antifreeze) poisoning
fomepizole (inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase) > ethanol, dialysis
