Species Specific Peri-operative Requirements L9 Flashcards
Recovery Period Considerations for Exotics:
Wrap birds in a towel (prevent wing flapping), inhalant agent terminated 15-20mins before end of surgery in reptiles to reduce recovery time, maintain body temps (particularly in reptiles (low metabolic rate), avoid over-wetting patient pre-op to prevent hypothermia, offer food and water asap to reduce risk of anorexia and gut stasis in rabbits.
Extubation in Dogs and Cats:
Dogs - once they have regained ability to swallow, deflate the cuff just before extubation, as unable to protect their airway.
Cats - just before they regain ability to swallow due to risk of laryngeal spasm.
Extubation in Rabbits/small rodents and Birds:
Rabbits/small rodents - once they start to swallow or regain motor control.
Birds - when fully awake, breathing well and able to swallow.
In what situations would an IV catheter need to remain?
High risk patients, patients requiring post-op IV meds, patients with risk of seizures, patients at risk of airway obstruction.
List some examples of abdominal procedures:
Ovariohysterectomy, tumours, exploratory laparotomy, gastric dilation volvulus, splenic rupture.
