Q

What drives allopatric speciation?

it could be ecological reasons (food, habitat)

it could be random

Q

What is assortative mating?

A

like breeds with like.

ex: bird with red feathers are more inclined to mating with other red feathered birds, keep the line pure.

Q

How do species maintain reproductive isolation while in sympatry?

Q

Explain what happened with Darwin’s finches.

A

1) Species A gets blown off its migratory path and lands on island A.
2) Evolution happens
3) very rare and random occurrence causes some of these birds to become isolated on another island. (ALLOPATRY)
4) Evolution happens
5) steps 3 and 4 repeat a few times until eventually some of these birds end up back on island A and undergo Sympatry.

Q

What caused allopatric speciation in yellow rumped warblers?

A

glacier came down and split the population up into two populations that diverged. Autobon’s warbler went to the west coast and Myrtle went to the east coast, but both are yellow-rumped.They were not separated long enough for reproductive isolating mechanisms to evolve.

Q

Describe the concept of ring species.

A

Species A interbreeds with subspecies B which interbreeds with subspecies C which interbreeds with subspecies D but species D CAN’T breed with species A.

17
Q

What are some challenges to the biological species concept?

A
  • ring species

- the two diverging species have to come back into contact with each other in order for it to be validated

18
Q

What is the Phylogenetic Species Concept?

A

species can interbreed but as long as they look different they are considered different species.

huh, humans? asians vs africans?
