Species and Taxonomy Flashcards
What is a species?
Any set of similar organisms that can combine genes in sexual reproduction to produce fertile offspring.
What is classification?
Organisation of organisms into groups.
What is artificial classification?
Divides organisms according to differences that are useful at the time, including size/colour.
How does phylogenetic classification consider how organisms should be organised?
Considers evolutionary relationships between organisms and classifies them using shared features derived from ancestors.
List the binomial naming system in order.

What are archaea?
Extremophiles
Explain some features of archaea that would be used to classify them artificially.
No nucleus
No peptidoglycan in cell walls
Membranes contain fatty acids
Ribosomes similar to eukaryotes
What are bacteria?
Single celled prokaryotes.
What are eukaryotes?
Organisms made of 1+ cells containing some membrane bound organelles.
How are members of the same species able to recognise each other?
They have similar genes and therefore resemble each other physically and biochemically.
What is the purpose of courtship behaviour?
Helps animals to identify members of the same species for them to reproduce and form fertile offspring with.
When will females respond to courtship behaviour?
They will only be receptive to courtship behaviour around the time they produce eggs.
What does the male do if the female does not respond to courtship behaviour?
Court elsewhere.
