Genes, DNA, RNA and Chromosomes Flashcards
What is a gene?
A section of DNA that codes for a polypeptide.
What are loci?
A specific position of a gene chromosome.
Name 3 types of RNA.
mRNA
tRNA
rRNA
What is rRNA?
RNA that forms part of ribosome structure.
What is tRNA?
A molecule that carries amino acids towards the polypeptide being produced so it can join the chain.
What is mRNA?
Contains codons which are read by the ribosome to produce the polypeptide.
What is a codon?
A section of 3 nucleotides.
What does ‘degenerate code’ mean?
Many amino acids are coded for by more than one triplet.
What are start and stop codons?
The codon at the start of every DNA sequence is the same. They begin and end polypeptide production.
What does ‘non overlapping’ code mean?
Each codon is only read once.
What are introns?
Non coding sections of DNA
What are exons?
Coding sections of DNA
Compare the length of prokaryotic and eukaryotic DNA.
Eukaryotic DNA is longer than prokaryotic.
Compare the shape of prokaryotic and eukaryotic DNA.
Eukaryotic DNA is linear, prokaryotic DNA is circular.
Compare the location of prokaryotic and eukaryotic DNA.
Eukaryotic DNA stored in chromosomes in the nucleus, prokaryotic DNA stored in the cytoplasm
