Species and Taxonomy Flashcards
1
Q
What are species?
A
Organisms of the same species that can breed to produce fertile offspring
2
Q
What do phylogenetic trees show?
A
The relationship between species. The branch point represents a common ancestor
3
Q
What is taxonomy?
A
The science of classification. Each level in the hierarchy is called a taxon
4
Q
Domains
A
- Eukarya
- Bacteria
- Archaea
5
Q
Binomial naming system
A
Genus (capital letter) then species (lower case)
6
Q
What is courtship behaviour?
A
Behaviour increasing the chance of successful mating
7
Q
Examples of courtship behaviour
A
- Recognition of same species
- Stimulate release of gametes
- Recognition of opposite sex
- Indicate sexual maturity
8
Q
How is genome sequencing used in phylogenetics?
A
- Compare order of base sequences on genomes of different species
- The higher % match, the more closely related
9
Q
How is immunology used in phylogenetics?
A
- Tertiary structure of protein tells us about the sequence of DNA (DNA>mRNA>amino acid>protein)
- If same antibodies bind to a specific antigen, indicates closely related
