Speciation Flashcards
Speciation
Formation of new species
Transformation
A new species gradually develops as a result of mutation and adaptation to changing environmental conditions and the old species is entirely replaced
Divergence
One or more species arise from a parent species, the parent species continues to exist
Adaptive radiation
The diversification of a common ancestral species into a variety of species, all of which being differently adapted
Eg. Darwins finches
Allopatric speciation
(Geographical isolation)l occurs when populations of a species are separated by a physical barrier
Eg. River or mountain range
- separation means there is no mating between the two new populations
Reproductive isolation
Evolution of mating location, time, or rituals, lack of reproductive fit, or offspring unviable or sterile
Sympatric speciation
(No geographical isolation): occurs without a physical barrier to mating
- mutations leading to chromosome number changes in plants
Gradualism
Gradual changes occurs steadily in a linear fashion
Punctuation equilibrium
Evolutionary history consists of long periods of equilibrium where there is little change, interrupted by periods of speciation
