Specialty Tests Flashcards
What are the two specialty tests that test for shoulder dislocation?
Apprehension test for anterior shoulder dislocation- supine 90 degrees abduction and 90 degrees elbow flexion. therapist laterally rotates shoulder
Apprehension test for posterior shoulder dislocation- 90 degrees flexion and medial rotation. Therapist applies posterior force through long axis of the humerus
Speed’s Test
Tests for bicipital tendonitis
pt. position in sitting or standing w/ elbow extended and forearm supinated. Therapist resists active shoulder flexion (proximal to wrist) and checks foe pain in the bicipital groove.
Yergason’s Test
Tests for bicipital tendonitis
Pt. is positioned sitting w/ 90 degrees elbow flex. Pt. is instructed to actively supinate and laterally rotate against resistance.
Drop arm test
Tests for rotator cuff tear
Pt. sitting or standing w/ 90 degrees shoulder abduction. Pt. is asked to slowly lower their arm to the side. Positive test is the inability to lower the arm slowly or the presence of severe pain.
Hawkins-Kennedy test
Tests for shoulder impingement
Pt. is sitting or standing and the therapist flexes pt.’s shoulder to 90 degrees and then medially rotates the arm. A positive test is indicated pain which may involve the supraspinatus tendon.
Infraspinatus Test
Tests for infraspinatus strain/tear
Pt. stands w/ elbow flexed to 90 degrees and 45 degrees shoulder medial rotation. The pt. resists force applied to forearm medially.
