specialised plant cells Flashcards
what are two specialised plant cells?
phloem and xylem.
what does the phloem contain?
sieve tube elements.
what do the sieve tube elements in the phloem contain?
very little cytoplasm.
why do the sieve tubes contain very little in the phloem cytoplasm?
so there’s lots of space to transport sucrose and other nutrients.
what does the companion cell in the phloem contain?
lots of mitochondria.
what is the role of the mitochondria in the phloem?
supply energy for respiration for active transport of sucrose.
where does the sucrose need to go in the phloem?
into and out of the sieve tubes.
where is sucrose translocated in the phloem?
around the plant in the phloem sieve tubes.
are xylem vessels alive or dead?
dead.
do the cells in the xylem contain cytoplasm?
no, they have no contents
why don the xylem cells contain anything?
so there is more space for water to mover through.
what is in the water that is good for the plant?
mineral ions.
why is there holes in the xylem walls? and what are they called?
- it is to let water in and out
- they’re called pits
what are the walls of the xylem strengthened by?
lignin rings
why does the xylem have no end walls?
so water can easily flow through.
