Mitosis Flashcards
What is interphase
When the cell prepares to divide,
What’s happens during interphase
The cell grows and increases the amount of sub cellular structures
What are sub cellular structures
Mitochondria, ribosomes.
What happens to a cells DNA in interphase
It duplicates, so there is one copy for each new cell.
What shape are DNA chromosomes after interphase
X-shaped
How many stages of mitosis are there
4
What stage follows interphase
Mitosis
What are the 4 stages of mitosis
- Prophase
2.Metaphase
3.Anaphase
4.Telophase
(Pinch My Arse Tunnel)
What happens during prophase
- The chromosomes condense
- The membrane around nucleus breaks down
- Chromosomes lie free in cytoplasm
What happens during metaphase
Chromosomes line up at centre of cell
What happens during anaphase
- Spindle fibres pull the chromosomes apart
- Chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell
What happens during telophase
- Membranes form around each set of chromosomes
- These become the nuclei of the two new cells
What is cytokinesis
It is the last stage of telophase, when cytoplasm and call membrane divide to form two separate cells
What does the cell cycle do
Makes new cells for growth and repair
What do chromosomes contain
Genetic information in the form of coiled up DNA molecules
How many copies of each chromosomes do each body cell have
2
What is a diploid cell
One chromosome from the organisms ‘mother’ and one from its ‘father’
What is the stage called when the cell divides
Mitosis
What is it called when organisms use mitosis to reproduce
Asexual reproduction
(E.g. strawberry plants form runners by mitosis)
What is produced at the end of mitosis
Two new daughter cells which have identical sets of chromosomes
Are daughter cells genetically identical to the parent cell
Yes they’re genetically identical diploid cells
What is the formula to work out the number of cells there will be after multiple divisions of a cell in mitosis
Number of cells= 2n
Where ‘n’ is the number of divisions by mitosis
(E.g. 2power5 = 2x2x2x2x2=32)
