Specialised Cells and Stem Cells Flashcards
Do cells look the same?
No.
What do different structures affect.
They affect the different functions.
What are red blood cells specialised for?
Carrying oxygen.
What are white cells specialised for?
For defending the body against disease.
What is cell differentiation?
Process by which a cell changes to become specialised for its job.
What do different organelles turn into as they develop?
Different types of cells. (allows them to carry out specific functions)
What are embryonic stem cells used for?
To replce faulty cells. (in sick people)
What can insulin-producing cells help with?
For people with diabetes, nerve cellsw for people paralysed by spianl injuries…
What are the risks involving using stem cells in medicine?
When grown in the labs they may become contaminated with a virus which could be passed on to the patient, which could make them even more ill.
Why are people against stem cell research?
That they feel that human embryos shouldn’t be used for experiments since each one is a potential human life.
