Specialised Cells Flashcards
When referring to stem cells what does unipotent mean
Cannot differentiate, but are capable of self renewal
When referring to stem cells what does multipotent mean
Can differentiate into a number of closely related cell types within a certain type of tissue
When referring to stem cells what does pluripotent mean
Can form any cell type but no the whole organism
When referring to stem cells what does totipotent mean
Are able to differentiate into any type of cell found in the body and into extra embryonic cells such as those in the placenta
What is a stem cell
- a cell that has not yet become specialised
- can replicate many times (self renewal)
- ha potential to become specialised (i.e. different types of cell)
How is squamous epithelial tissue specialised
- single layer of flat cells in a row that line the surface
- contains a basement membrane at the bottom found in the alveoli/capillaries for gas exchange
How are ciliated epithelium tissue specialised
- layer of cells covered in cilia
- allows things to be moved
- e.g. mucus being moved in the trachea
