Specialised Cells Flashcards
Specialised Cells
Cells that have a structure which makes them adapted to their function
Haploid Cell
A cell only contains half the number of chromosomes that’s in a normal body cell
Egg cell
Main function: carry the female DNA and nourish the developing embryo
• contains nutrients in the cytoplasm to feed the embryo
• has a haploid nucleus
• membrane changes structure after fertilisation to stop more sperm getting in
Sperm cell
Main function: transport male’s DNA to the female’s egg
• long tail so it can swim
• lost of mitochondria to provide it with energy
• acrosome where it stores enzymes needed to digest its way through the membrane of the egg cell
• contains haploid nucleus
Ciliated Epithelial Cells
- line the surfaces of organs
- have cilia on the top
- function is to move substances - cilia beat to move substances in one direction, along the surface of the tissue
