Specialised Cells Flashcards
What does specialised mean?
This means cells have special features so they can carry out their role
How are sperm cells adapted to their function of swimming to egg cell?
Tail
Streamline
Mitochondria to respire and release energy
Enzymes to digest through egg wall
What is the function of red blood cells?
To Carry oxygen from the lungs to cells
How are red blood cells adapted to their function ?
Haemoglobin sticks to oxygen
Large surface area to increase diffusion of oxygen
No nucleus so extra room for haemoglobin
What is the function of a nerve cell?
To send electrical impulses around the body
How is a nerve cell adapted to its function of sending electrical impulses around the body ?
Long axon - very long which is where the electrical impulse travels down
Synapses to connect to other nerve cells (coordinating the impulses)
What is the function of palisade cells?
To absorb light for photosynthesis
How are palisade cells adapted to their function?
Packed with chloroplasts
Regular shaped rectangular so closely packed to form a continuous layer for efficient absorption of sunlight
What is the function of a root hair cell?
Absorb water and mineral ions from the soil
How are root hair cells adopted to their function of absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil?
Long finger like projection (root hair) with very thin wall which gives a large surface area
No chloroplasts
What is the function of muscle cells?
They contract which help muscles to move
How are they adapted to their function?
Long
Band of proteins
Elongated shape can contract and relax
Lots of mitochondria so they release a lot of energy
