Cell Organisation Flashcards
What happens to your cells as you (multicellular organism) develop?
As a multicellular organism develops their cells differentiate
I.e. Your cells become specialised for a specific function
What is a tissue?
When a group of similar cells work together to carry out specific functions
The cells carry out a similar function and have a similar structure
Give 3 examples of tissues and their functions?
- muscular tissue - which can contract to bring about movement
- glandular tissue - which can produce substances such as enzymes and hormones
- epithelial tissue which covers some parts of the body
What is an organ ?
A group of several different tissues that work together to perform a certain function
Give an example of the kind of tissues that would be found in an organ like the stomach?
Muscular tissue - muscular tissue moves the stomach wall to churn up food
Glandular tissue - which produces substances such as enzymes and hormones which help digest the food
Epithelial tissue - which covered the inside and outside of the stomach
What is an organ system ?
An organ system is a group of organs working together to perform a particular function.
Give an example of an organ system?
The digestive system
What organs are working in the digestive system?
- GLANDS such as the PANCREAS and SALIVARY glands which produce digestive juices
- STOMACH and SMALL INTESTINE which digest the food
- LIVER which produces blue
- SMALL INTESTINE which absorbs soluble foods
- LARGE INTESTINE which absorbs water from undigested food producing faeces
Summary of cell organisation?
Specialised cells –> tissues –> organs –> organ system –> (multicellular organism )
Epithelial cell –> epithelial tissue –> stomach –> digestive system
Why do large multicellular organisms develop different systems inside them?
Large multicellular organisms develop different systems inside them for exchanging and transporting materials.
