Specialised Cells Flashcards
Function of the nerve cell
Carries electrical impulses from one place to another
Adaptations of the nerve cell
Axon (long part) : insulated by fatty sheath increasing the speed along the neuron
Thin: can carry many messages quickly around the body
Function of red blood cells
Deliver oxygen around the body
Adaptations of red blood cells
Small and flexible: can fit through the capillaries
No nucleus: space filled with haemoglobin
Ciliated Epithelium function
Push and waft mucus
Adaptation of cilated epithelium
Have scilia which waft mucus
Sperm cell function
Fertilise the egg
Sperm cell adaptations
- tail, helps it to travel to the egg
- lots of mitochondria - provides energy to get to the egg
Egg cell function
Generate a new individual
Egg cell adaptations
- cytoplasm which contains nutrients for the growth of an early embryo
- cell membrane which prevents the cell from being fertilised by multiple sperms
Root hair cell functions
Absorb water from the soil
Root hair cell adaptations
- large surface area- increases rate of absorption
- contain lots of mitochondria- provide energy for active transport
