specialised cells Flashcards
describe erythrocytes
no nucleus, have a biconcave shape increases SA:V ratio so they can fit more Hb and carry more oxygen round the body. no mitochondria (respire anaerobically). flexible so they can squeeze though narrow capillaries. 7.5um wide
describe neutrophils
a type of WBC essential for the immune system. multi lobed nucleus (3 beans) so they can squeeze through tight spaces to the site of infection. granular cytoplasm contains lots of lysosomes to digest pathogens. 10-14um wide.
describe sperm
role is to deliver genetic info to the female gamate. have many mitochondria to produce ATP needed to swim. flagella allows it to swim. acrosome on the head of sperm contains digestive enzymes so it is able to penetrate the ovum leading to fertilisation
