enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
what is the difference between co enzymes and co factors.
A
they both can form part of the active site of an enzyme or transfer groups in multi step reactions. however co factors are inorganic (derived from minerals in the diet ie Fe, Cl, Ca, Zn ions) and coenzymes are organic (ie NAD or NADH derived from vitamins, co enzyme A).
2
Q
what is a prosthetic group and give an example
A
they are co factors, ie Hb and Fe, tightly bound forming permanent features of the protein (unlike other enzymes which form temporary components of the protein) ie Zn forms a temporary role in carbonic anhydrase essential for metabolism of CO2.
