Specialised Cells Flashcards
What is the location of the nerve cell?
All over the body.
What is the structure and function of the nerve cell?
They are extremely long
Many branches to messages up and down the body (e.g pain).
What is the location of the palisade cell?
A leaf
What is the structure/ function of a palisade cell?
Packed with chloroplasts to absorb sunlight.
To Cary out photosynthesis which makes food to feed the plant.
What is the location of a root hair cell?
At the end of plant roots.
What is the structure/ function of the root hair cell?
They are large and thin to absorb lots of water.
Absorb minerals and water from the soil.
Location of the egg cell?
Human ovary.
What is the structure/ function of the egg cell?
Contains yolk that acts as a food source for developing embryo.
Carries the mother’s DNA.
What is the location of the red blood cell?
Blood
What is the structure/ function of the red blood cell?
Has a large surface area to absorb oxygen. Packed with red pigment to carry oxygen.
Carries oxygen to cells.
What is the location of the sperm cell?
Male testes.
What is the structure/ function of the sperm cell?
A tail to swim
Chemicals in the head to help entry into egg.
Many mitochondria to release energy for swimming
Fertilise the egg cell.
What is the location of the ciliated cell?
Air passages in the lungs.
What is the structure/function of the ciliated cell?
They have tiny hairs called cilia.
Hairs sweep mucus with trapped dust and bacteria back up to throat to be swallowed.
Where are the muscle cells
All over the body.
What is the structure/ function of a muscle cell?
They have many fibres that can lengthen and shorten.
Designed to contract (shorten) and allows us to move.
Where is the location of the xylem cell?
In plant stems.
What is the structure/ function of a xylem cell?
Cells line up end to end like a straw. They have rings of tough material to strengthen them.
To carry water and give support.
