Specialisation and Organisation Flashcards
suggest 3 regions of a gene
promoter: Located upstream of the RNA coding sequence. Ensures proper location of initiation and ensures correct positioning of RNA polymerase
RNA coding sequence: The DNA sequence that is transcribed into RNA
Terminator: a sequence downstream of the RNA coding region which specifies where transcription will stop
Outline the Transcription process
Initiation:
Location of the promoter region by transcription initiation complexes
Elongation:
RNA Polymerase catalyses the synthesis of RNA in the 5’ to 3’ direction
Chain termination & release of RNA:
The end of the gene is marked by a terminator sequence. The RNA polymerase ceases activity and the nascent RNA is released
