Special Senses Eye Flashcards
Conjunctiva
thin, clear, colorless, mucous membrane that covers entire eye (protects)
Sclera
white part of eye that that maintains eye shape and protects eye
Cornea
clear, anterior portion of sclera, protects iris, no blood vessels, gets oxygen from tears
Choroid
blood rich coating of the eyeball; provides nourishment to eye, provides oxygen and nutrients to the outer layer of the retina, contains melanin
Pupil
controls light entering inside the eye, prevents excess light
Iris
muscular layer that surrounds pupil to constrict or dilate pupil
Lens
clear curved flexible structure that focuses images on the retina
Ciliary body
(ciliary muscle and suspensory ligaments) adjusts shape of lens to help focus on object
Aqueous Humor
cleanses the eye and provides nutrients to cornea and lens; hold shape of anterior eye
Vitreous Humor
gel like fluid that hold retina in place
Retina
contains photoreceptors that receives images from the envion. And converts them to nerve (electrical impulses) change light impulses to electric
Photoreceptors - Rods
responsible for black and white (allow us to see in dim light and provide our peripheral vision)
Photoreceptors - Cones
responsible for colors and hues
Macula
area on retina that contains specialized cones in high density to help with high acuity (fovea Centralis)
Optic nerve
2nd cranial nerve for processing images
lacrimal Apparatus (tear apparatus)
in the medial corner
