Pathology for the EYE Flashcards
Cataract
clouding of the lens from abnormal protein deposits (common in dogs and older people) medications can cause this. Treatment is transplanting lens
Diabetic Retinopathy
ruptured capillaries inside of eye from untreated diabetes that can result in progressive vision loss (retina goes without oxygen)
Ectropion
eversion of the eyelid (turns outward) gets eye redness and irritation, damage to cornea
Entropion
inversion of the eyelid; leads to corneal damage
Glaucoma
disease where intraocular pressure causes damage to retina and optic nerve if left untreated, idiopathic, can lead to peripheral vision loss
Hordeolum
inflammation of an oil gland in eyelid (stye) pimple on eyelid, usually due to infection
Macular degeneration
progressive, age related deterioration of the macula area appears dark when light reflected; leads to blurred and lost vision.
Refractive Disorders
Disorders from irregularly shaped cornea or lens that affect the way light enters eye and also the shape of eye (causes the need for glasses)
Astigmatism
defective curvature of cornea producing blurred vision (doubles the light to make blurred vision) cornea or lens has irregular shape; rear and far vision is affected
Hyperopia
condition of shortened eye ball shape results in farsightedness cant see up close; focuses light behind retina instead of directly on it
Myopia
condition of elongated eye ball shape results in nearsightedness (most popular) light reflects In Front if retina (objects in the distance are blurry) cornea is curved
Presbyopia
farsightedness in old people from reduced elasticity in lens (lens wearing out) makes it hard to focus on close objects
Retinal Detachment
emergency condition of eye which retina sptonasly pulls away from choroid layer of blood vessels - blindness occurs if not repaired; loosens and detaches
strabismus
misalignment of eyes due to muscle weakness. crossed eyes; can grow out of it
farsightedness
cant see up close, shortened eye ball
nearsightedness
elongated eye ball; can see far away
opthamologist
medical doctor (MD), can prescribe descriptions, does surgeries (RX)
Optometrist
doctor but not medical, glasses and contacts; correct vision, can prescribe few descriptions (O.D.) doctorate in optometry
