Special Senses Flashcards
How is balance maintained?
Endolymph in the semicircular canals and vestibule changes how the bathing of hairs is registered by sensory receptors.
It is sent to the vestibulocochlear nerve
(Also the cerebellum)
Where is earwax secreted?
In the external auditory meatus
What are ossicles?
3 small bones that forma a chain to vibrate into the tympanic cavity
What are the stages of the visual pathway?
Cornea - light enters
Aqueous humour - refraction occurs
Lens - adjusts by accommodation
Vitreous humour - refraction
Rods & cones - convert the light to neural signals that go to the visual cortex
What nerve controls convergence?
Occulomotor CIII
What does convergence mean?
coordinated muscle movement to focus on corresponding points of the retinas
How does light refraction work?
Light passing through different densities causes the light to separate into its constituent colours
What are the two segments of the eye?
Aqueous humour and vitreous humour
What its the function of the sclera?
maintaining the structure of the eye and attachment points for muscles
What three parts of the eye control light absorption?
Chloroid, ciliary bodies, iris
Where are the olfactory sensory receptors?
in the olfactory bulb between the crib form plate of the ethmoid
Where do olfactory axons travel to?
The limbic system and the olfactory area of the cerebellum
