Teratogen
Agents that will disrupt normal development of a fetus or halt pregnancy
Which trimester is the period of greatest danger?
First trimester due to massive cell formulation
What is reduced (and why) regarding absorption in paediatrics
First pass effect because of immature liver
* this means that a drug given will have greater affect than to a person with a fully developed liver
If the paediatric population has a undeveloped liver this means that the amount of protein will be?
Decreased
What is metabolism like in the pediatric population?
With an immature liver there isn’t enough proper CYP enzymes to break down (metabolize) the drug therefore more drug will be going into the child’s system
How does a kidney immaturity in the paediatric population affect secretion?
With undeveloped kidneys excretion because more difficult allowing the drug to stay in the body longer
Who are the largest medicine consumers
Geriatric population
Poly pharmacy
Individual is on multiple medications at a time
