4kts is enforced within the guide piers of Hiram M. Chittenden locks. Speed limit of 7kts is enforced elsewhere in the lake Washington ship canal except in area marked by 4 private buoys in north part of lake Union

Locks

A. Openings-
-2 long and 3 short blasts of a whistle, horn or megaphone for towing Vsls.
-2 long and 2 short blasts for all other Vsls.
B. Salt Water Barrier- depth over the barrier is in signs near the ends of the large lock guide piers. A yellow light shines when the barrier is raised. Vsls needing great depth sound 1 long 2short blasts. When the yellow light is extinguished the operator can assume the barrier is lowered.
C. Traffic lights on the East and west end of locks. Green= proceed, Red= wait
D. US, city of Seattle and passenger vessels operating on a regular schedule have precedence over all other passing through the locks. Registered merchant vessels have precedence over pleasure craft

Bridges

A. Opening in the ship canal- 1 prolonged followed by 1 short blast. 5 short by bridge tender indicates the draw Cannot be opened immediately or is about to be closed.
B. The bridge tenders of lake Washington ship canal monitor vhf ch 16 and 13. Working channels is vhf ch 13
C. Red and green traffic lights for ship canal traffic: Red= Vsls of 300 gross tons and over and all tows wait. Green= proceed. Vsls of less then 300 gross tons without tows may disregard these signals but they shall travel at very slow speed when passing other Vsls
D. Fog- draw tender after acknowledging signal to open shall toll a bell continuously during approach and passage of Vsls

Closed from 0700-0900 and 1600-1800 M-F except federal holiday for Vsls less than 1000 gross tons unless vsl has a tow greater than 1000 gross tons. Also will open under emergency conditions when Seattle city engineer is notified. Fremont bridge tender needs 1hr notice between 2300-0700

Closed from 0700-0900 and 1530-1830 M-F except federal holidays for any Vsl or watercraft less than 1000 gross tons unless the Vsls is towing a tow greater than 1000 gross ton. Tender needs 1hr notice between 2300-0700
