Lake Washington ship canal
Extends from puget sound through Shilshole bay, salmon bay, lake Union, portage bay and Union Bay to deep water in Lake Washington. The federal project depth is 30ft. The entrance to lake Washington ship canal is marked by lighted buoys and a light range.
Shilshole bay
Is between meadow point and West Point. Is an open bight from which lake Washington ship canal is entered and is the site of the largest marina in the Seattle area. Clay cliffs extend for .5nm south of the canal entrance.
Hiram M Chittenden Locks
A government owned and operated double lock and fixed damn are at the narrows of the entrance to salmon bay 1.2nm from the sound. The large lock, a 2 chamber structure with a saltwater barrier at the east end. The small lock is a single chamber structure. Passage time is less than 30min for large vessels and 5-10min for small Vsls
Salmon bay
Extends .8nm from the east end of the locks. There are numerous piers and floats with extensive small-craft facilities on the bay
Fisherman’s terminal
Immediately west of the Ballard bridge on the south side of the channel. The terminal is a home port of a large commercial fishing fleet, 700 berths
Lake Union
Is about 1nm long and .5nm wide in a north/south direction. There are numerous marinas and repair facilities, also several commercial wharves from which various commodities are shipped by barge. Drydock company with floating Drydock. Lake Union park on S end and gas works park on N end.
Portage bay
East of lake Union. Has many slips and finger piers for small craft
Montlake cut
Leads from portage bay past the conspicuous buildings and athletic stadium of university of Washington in the north side, then into union bay and then into lake Washington
Lake Washington
Large freshwater lake on Seattle east side, provides deep and protects water over most of its length of nearly 16nm. The shores of the lake are studded with private piers and landings. There are also marinas and small craft repair at many locations. There are a few commercial installations.
Measure nautical mile I
Has been established along the pontoon bridge to Mercer Is. The targets are painted on both sides of the bridges so that the course can be run from either north or south of the bridge. True course 091-55’
Combined measured half nautical mile, nautical mile
A 2000 meter measured course has been established along the pontoon bridge from foster island to evergreen point bearing 102 degrees 30 minutes. The half nautical mile and mile courses have been marked on the south side of the bridge by 18 inch circles resembling engineers target
Houghton
At the NE side of the lake just south of Kirkland, is the site of former shipyard. There are several marinas catering yachtsmen
Juanita bay
North of Kirkland, is a summer recreational area with several small piers
Sand point
On the west shore of the lake just NE of Union bay. Offices and storage facilities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric agency are located here
Kenmore
At the north end of lake Washington. Is the site of several marinas and barge loading facility. A dredged channel marked by lighted buoys lead across the flats to a turning basin with controlling depth of 11ft
