What is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)?
A federal law that ensures students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education.
What is the difference between an impairment, a disability, and a handicap?
An impairment is a loss or reduction of function in a body part or organ. A disability is when an impairment limits a person’s ability to perform certain tasks. A handicap is a problem or disadvantage faced by a disabled or impaired person when interacting with the environment.
What are some causes of disabilities?
Genetic factors, environmental factors, and prenatal, natal, and postnatal periods.
What are the three steps to special education?
Pre-referral, evaluation, and developing an IEP.
What are some strategies for supporting students with cognitive or academic difficulties?
Minimize distractions, use multiple methods of presentation, analyze errors, teach learning and memory strategies, and provide study aids.
What are some strategies for supporting students with social or behavioral problems?
Be alert for home problems, make classroom events relevant, show personal interest, identify suicidal signs, teach interpersonal skills, be clear about expectations, and identify problems early.
What are some strategies for supporting students with autism spectrum disorder?
Create a predictable environment, support social communication, cater to special interests, address sensory sensitivities, and promote independence.
What are some strategies for supporting students with mental retardation?
Adapted instruction and vocational skills training.
What are some strategies for supporting students with physical/sensory challenges?
Be sensitive to physical condition, educate classmates, and refer to text for specific recommendations.
What are some strategies for supporting gifted students?
Provide individualized tests and assignments, form study groups, teach complex cognitive skills, provide opportunities for independent study, encourage high goals, and seek outside resources.
What are the eligibility criteria for special education services?
Must meet criteria of one of the 13 disability categories and must have a need for special education services due to the disability.
What is an individualized education program (IEP)?
A legally binding document that outlines services, goals, accommodations, modifications, and support for a student with a disability.
What are the different levels of support?
Transitional, low, medium, and high.
What is prompting?
Cues students need to respond to in the school environment.
What is assistive technology (AT)?
Devices and services that help students gain independence.
