Special Considerations Flashcards
List the different types of physical challenges
Hearing impairment, Visual impairment, Speech impairment, Obesity, Paralysis
What are the two types of hearing impairments
Conductive, sensorineural
What type of deafness can be cured
Conductive
What type of deafness is permanent
Sensorineural
Conductive deafness results from
the prevention of soundwaves from entering to middle/inner ear.
List three causes of conductive deafness
Otitis media: Middle ear infection
Temporary blockage
Hematomas
List three causes of sensorineural deafness
Bacterial meningitis
Labyrinthitis: Inner ear infection
Progressive hearing loss
Sensorineural deafness results from
Nerve impulses being unable to reach the brain
What are the four types of speech impairment
Language, Articulation, Voice production, Fluency
An impaired ability to understand spoken or written word (Aphasia)
Language disorder
Sensory aphasia
patient cannot understand to spoken word. May not
respond to question because they do not understand
Motor aphasia
patient can no longer use the symbols of speech. This is
also known as expressive aphasia. Patients can understand what you
say but harder time articulating a response.
Global aphasia
Have both sensory and motor aphasia
Difficulty being understood, speech is affected
Articulation disorder
What may cause articulation disorders
Neural damage or anatomical conditions
hoarseness, harshness, inappropriate
pitch, or abnormal nasal resonance when speaking
Voice production disorder
Stuttering
Fluency disorder
List two causes of developmental disabilities
Genetics, Trauma
List at least 3 physical signifiers of down syndrome
- Physical features to recognize
- Eyes sloped up at the outer corners
- Folds of skin on either side of the nose that cover the inner corner of the eye
- Small face and features
- Large and protruding tongue
- Flattening of the back of the head
- Short and broad hands
List at least 3 physical signifiers of fetal alcohol syndrome
- Small head with multiple facial abnormalities
- Small eyes with short slits
- Wide, flat nose bridge
- Lack of groove between the nose and lip
- Small jaw
A condition in which chemotherapy causes low levels of neutrophils
Neutropenia
What are the three types of cerebral palsy
Spastic, Athetosis, Ataxia
Most common form of cerebral palsy, permanent stiffness
Spastic
Cerebral palsy characterized by involuntary movements
Athetosis
Rarest form of cerebral palsy, Creates issues with gait and balance
Ataxia cerebral Palsy
Thick mucus forms in the lungs causing bronchial obstruction and collapse of the alveoli
Cystic Fibrosis
A communicable disease that effects the grey matter of the spinal cord
Poliomyelitis
How does polio enter the body
The GI tract
Congenital abnormality where there is a defect in the
closure of the backbone and the spinal canal
Spina Bifida
Which form of spina bifida has fewer outward signs
Spina bifida occulta
Which form of Spina bifida has cord protruding from the back
Spina bifida cystica
Autoimmune disease characterized by chronic
weakness of voluntary muscles and progressive fatigue
Myasthenia Gravis
S/S of Myasthenia gravis
Lack of energy, Eyelid droop, Chewing/swallowing trouble, Double vision
