Transactional process involving participants operating w/ specific context whereby they create a relationship buy sending and receiving messages
What are the different forms of communication?
Liner - directional transfer of message
Interactive - 2 way exchange include feedback and context
Transactional - simultaneous communication §
How can decision making be affected by communication?
Hard to achieve
Lack of opportunities for decision-making
- Limited interactions, language/speech difficulty, difficulty establish rapport
What support do people need with decision making?
May need support with choice and decisions
Explanation about consequences and outcomes of particular decision
Increasing knowledge to facilitate choice/decsion
What are communication aids?
Produce accessible material - consent/information sheets
e.g Makaton - children/ adults - interaction of all kind
How can pictures help?
Help understand information
Can help get message across
Not everyone communicates verbally
Creates independency and participation
What people may use symbols regularly?
People w/ English not first language People memory/cognitive difficulties People dyslexia Hearing impaired People w/ learning difficulty
What are the limitations of using pictures?
Not all people take same meaning from picture/ photo/ symbol
How can carers help with support?
Provide daily basis of support to enable the individual to play an active part in health care decisions
What may carers struggle with?
May be unable to work Feel high levels of stress May delay social life/ life Can feel isolated Profound personal, financial and social consequences
How to tx those in dental care?
Ask carer about any reaction pt may have to treatment Get to know pt/carer before Allow time Discuss tx and procedures thoroughly Allow carer to be present if necessary
